June 6, 2017, marks one year since the legend Kevin “Kimbo Slice” Ferguson passed away at the age of 42.
In the video above, we take a look at the work of MMA Fighting’s Esther Lin and her story of getting to know Kimbo throughout his career in mixed martial arts.
Kimbo Slice was one of the early viral stars from the internet as his bare knuckle backyard fights were viewed millions of times before he ever stepped into the cage to compete on television. His stardom from the internet translated seamlessly over to being the biggest draw in fights on TV for EliteXC, UFC, and Bellator. Kimbo was constantly bringing in big ratings for his fights, often breaking TV ratings records.
Now, Kimbo’s son, Kevin Ferguson Jr. – who has the nickname “Baby Slice” is carrying on in his father’s footsteps fight fighting in mixed martial arts. “Baby Slice” just scored his first professional win over Darryal Griffin at Bellator 179, which took place in May. “Baby Slice” won by TKO in the first round and will look to continue on his journey in MMA.
“I want to continue the legacy and take the legacy to the next level,” Ferguson Jr. told MMA Junkie following his win. “I want to evolve the ‘Slice’ name. My dad was a brawler, a striker. He didn’t like going to the ground. He liked staying on his feet. As you can see, I defended a triangle [choke], I defended an armbar. So I’m showing that I have some ground skills and I can defend the ground.”
What is your favorite memory of the late Kimbo Slice? Was it one of the crazy backyard brawls? Or perhaps his personality is what caught you? Whether brawling in or out of the cage, one thing that many people can recall of the late Kimbo Slice was his kind, caring, and friendly attitude that he had and shared with those that knew him.
It’s hard to believe that it has already been one year since Kimbo Slice left us, but this legend will surely never be forgotten.
