Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone and his grandmother have one of the most adoring bonds that you will find in the sport of mixed martial arts.
Cerrone, who spent his time growing up as an adolescent with his grandparents in Colorado, has stayed extremely close to his gradmother, especially after his grandfather passed away.
Cerrone was accompanied by his grandmother during the ceremonial weigh-in for the UFC on FOX 23 event and she was in attendance for the fight where Jorge Masvidal ended up winning by TKO in the second round after he nearly finished “Cowboy” at the end of the first.
Masvidal was seen speaking with Cerrone’s grandmother backstage after the fight was over and UFC’s Megan Olivi asked “Gambred” how that conversation went.
“Man, she just, she killed me, man. That was like a heart blow,” Masvidal said. “She just came up to me and she said, ‘That’s my grandson, and you’re a great fighter, and nobody has taken out my grandson like that.’
“I, I, man, I might be a bad guy, but things like that, they get me. I don’t wanna beat nobody in front of their mom or grandma. I have kids, I couldn’t imagine seeing my kids going in there. So, man, that hurt a little bit.”
Masvidal explained earlier in the interview with Olivi that Cerrone is as tough as they come and after going through battle with him in the Octagon, “Gambred” says he has nothing but respect for “Cowboy.”
“He’s a warrior. The shot that I hit him with and the couple shots that I hit him with on the ground, not a lot of dudes would get back up and want to keep going, but he actually he did. He gave it all he had. He’s got all my respect in the world.”
