Last weekend, in the co-main event of UFC 210, streaking middleweight contender Gegard Mousasi scored an extremely valuable win over former middleweight champion Chris Weidman. Unfortunately, this win was not without controversy…
The controversy began in the second round, when Mousasi seemed to be stealing the bout’s momentum. After sprawling on a Weidman takedown, he blasted the former champ with two jarring knees. Given that Weidman appeared to have two hands on the ground, which would have made these knees illegal, referee Dan Miragliotta jumped into the chaos to pause the action and evaluate.
What followed was a truly chaotic scene, as referees, doctors, officials and fighters milled about the Octagon, trying to determine how best to proceed. Ultimately, it was decided with the help of a slo mo replay, that Mousasi’s knees were in fact legal. Given that Weidman was unable to tell the referee what the date was – he said it was February – the fight was then waved off. Mousasi would leave Buffalo New York – the setting of the event – with a new and massive win on his record, but one with a definite asterisk attached to it.
At the UFC 210 post-fight press conference, Mousasi unsurprisingly fielded many questions about the chaotic ending of this fight. Though the Mousasi of old might have given a clean, monotonic answer, the frustrated, agitated, and animated Mousasi of the year 2017 had some much more memorable responses, emphasized by plenty of f-words and other curses.
After seeing Mousasi post an article about the importance of instant replay in the outcome of this fight, Twitter user @FurysFightPicks shared a version of the classic, Thug Life Meme, using one of Mousasi’s answers from the UFC 210 post-fight presser. See it at the top of this post.
