UFC parts ways with another flyweight fighter, releases former WSOF titleholder Magomed Bibulatov

Magomed Bibulatov

The UFC’s flyweight purge is not showing any signs of slowing down. Following a stretch that saw the Las Vegas based promotion cut ties with fighters like Jose Torres, Ulka Sasaki, Ben Nguyen, Roberto Sanchez and Jared Brooks, they’ve now released Russia’s Magomed Bibulatov. This news comes from Marcel Dorff of MMA DNA, who added the Bibulatov has already found a new home in Absolute Championship Akhmat (ACA).

Magomed Bibulatov joined the UFC roster with a flawless 14-0 record, and accolades as a former World Series of Fighting flyweight champion and WCFA Flyweight Grand Prix winner.

After winning his UFC debut with a decision victory over Jenel Lausa, he found himself on the wrong end of a highlight reel knockout in a fight with former UFC flyweight title challenger John Moraga. His next and final UFC bout occurred in Fortaleza in February, when he gave up a controversial decision to Rogério Bontorin.

Bibulatov’s release from the UFC roster represents that latest sign that the promotion is slowly getting rid of its flyweight division, which has long struggled to gain meaningful traction among fans.

When pressed about the issue UFC President White has non committal. That being said, reigning UFC flyweight champion Henry Cejudo’s move up to the bantamweight division seems like it could be one of the final nails in the division’s coffin.

Stay tuned for updates on the ACA run of Magomed Bibulatov, and the state of the UFC flyweight division, as new details emerge.
