A key flyweight bout between top contenders Askar Askarov and Joseph Benavidez took place on tonight’s UFC 259 prelims.
Benavidez (28-8 MMA) had entered tonight’s contest in hopes of snapping a two-fight losing skid. In his two most previous efforts, Joe-B had suffered back-to-back stoppage losses to reigning division champion Deiveson Figueiredo.
Meanwhile, Askar Askarov (13-0-1 MMA) entered UFC 259 sporting an undefeated record, with his lone blemish being a draw against current #1 contender Brandon Moreno. The Russian standout had earned unanimous decision victories over Tim Elliott and Alexandre Pantoja in his most previous Octagon appearances.
Tonight’s Askarov vs. Benavidez fight proved to be a pretty one-sided contest. Despite his best efforts, Joseph Benavidez had little to offer the Russian standout and was outpointed for fifteen straight minutes.
Official UFC 259 Result: Askar Askarov def. Joseph Benavidez by unanimous decision (30-27 x2, 30-26)
