Report | UFC 237 moved from Curitiba to Rio de Janeiro

Rose Namajunas, UFC 237

UFC 237, scheduled for May 11, will no longer be occurring in Curitiba, per a report from Combate.

Due to a scheduling issue with the Curitiba football team Club Athletico Paranaense, the card will now go down in Rio de Janeiro on the same night.

UFC 237, which now marks the UFC’s 10th visit to Rio de Janeiro, is tentatively topped by a strawweight title fight between long absent champion Rose Namajunas and fearsome challenger Jessica Andrade. The bout will mark Namajunas’ first fight since April of 2018, and Andrade’s second attempt to claim the strawweight belt.

Yesterday, it was announced that the card will also feature a high-stakes middleweight showdown between former champion Anderson Silva and rising contender Jared Cannonier. The bout will mark Silva’s chance to rebound from an entertaining loss to Israel Adesanya at UFC 234, and Cannonier’s opportunity to build on the momentum of a win over former two-division World Series of Fighting champ David Branch.

The card is also set to include a light heavyweight fight between Antônio Rogério Nogueira and Ryan Spann, and a bantamweight bout between Irene Aldana and Bethe Correia.

UFC 237 is not the first card the UFC has moved of late. In December, the UFC moved the entire UFC 232 bill from Las Vegas to Los Angeles on a weeks’ notice after headliner Jon Jones produced anomalous drug test results. Fans were understandably furious.

Luckily, this time around, the card has been relocated with far more notice, and for much less concerning reasons.
