Prosecutors drop charges against Conor McGregor after phone-smashing ordeal

Conor McGregor

Conor McGregor is no longer facing criminal charges in the state of Florida.

Earlier this year, the Irish star found himself in hot water after allegedly smashing the cell phone of 22-year-old fan Ahmed Abdirzak. Roughly a month ago, however, Abdirzak withdrew his charges against McGregor, which implied that a settlement had been reached behind the scenes.

In the wake of this suspected settlement, Abdirzak claimed that he no longer believed Conor McGregor intended to cause him injury or damages. This was problematic for prosecutors in Florida, as it represented a bit of 180 in terms the victim’s story. As a result, they’ve decided he is not credible, and dropped the lingering charges against McGregor.

In a conclusive memo, Assistant State Attorney Khalil Madani explained the situation.

Abdirzak “has credibility issues as he’s changed his previously sworn testimony,” Madani’s memo explained (h/t ESPN).

“Based on the witness’s credibility issues, his unwillingness to respond to a subpoena and the inability of the witnesses to testify as to his subjective mindset, the State of Florida cannot prove the charges against Mr. McGregor beyond a reasonable doubt.”

This incident occurred in late March, and landed Conor McGregor in jail. He was subsequently released on a $5,000 bond.

Originally, Abdirzak was after $15,000 in damages.

Conor McGregor has not fought since October of 2018, in the main event of UFC 229, when he was submitted in a lightweight title fight opposite undefeated champion Khabib Nurmagomedov. At present, all signs point to his returning this year — perhaps as soon as this summer. With Khabib Nurmagomedov, Donald Cerrone, Tony Ferguson, Nate Diaz and many other top lightweights currently booked, however, it will be interesting to see who he’s matched up with.
