The world was watching tonight as former two-division UFC champion Conor McGregor returned to fight current UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov in the main event of UFC 229.
The fight marked the first time “Mystic Mac” had stepped foot in the octagon since defeating Eddie Alvarez via second-round knockout at UFC 205 in November of 2016.
Despite the long layoff, Conor McGregor was full of confidence headed in to tonight’s contest against his undefeated Russian nemesis.
The brash Irishman had vowed to break Nurmagomedov’s “glass jaw” under the bright lights of T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
With that said, things did not work out that way for the former two division champion.
Instead, Khabib Nurmagomedov was able to not only drop Conor McGregor with a right hand but also smother him with his ground game.
Immediately following his emphatic win, Khabib proceeded to leap the cage and attack McGregor’s coach and teammate Dillon Danis. This sparked a massive brawl between the fight camps, much to the disappointment of the promotion.
Here is how the pros reacted to tonight’s UFC 229 Conor McGregor vs. Khabib Nurmagomedov main event and the brawl which ensued afterward:
Watching the @TheNotoriousMMA vs @TeamKhabib fight. Unimaginable never thought it would go down like this. Crazier than my fight riot.

This really isn't that bad let's be honest. Conor's crew did this same thing at a Bellator fight not to long ago

Hey guys, two wrongs don’t make it right. Conor didn’t deserve that. No one did. But some things aren’t for fight promotion. Religion, family, country. Throwing stuff in Brooklyn. For Khabib it wasn’t fight promotion, it was really personal. Diff culture man. Sucks

One evil doesn't make another ok. Just because a dolly was thrown at a bus and was wrong and he should have been punished doesnt mean that what happened tonight is ok.
As a champion, you set a higher standard. You don't stoop to that level. This is not the actions of a champion.

Khabib just went full heel, amazingly making Conor the good guy. Classic pro wrestling move. #UFC299
