Henry Cejudo targets featherweight title fight with Frankie Edgar

Henry Cejudo, UFC 238

Henry Cejudo is now the UFC flyweight and bantamweight champion. The former Olympic wrestler has held the flyweight belt since last summer and captured the bantamweight strap with a TKO defeat of Marlon Moraes at UFC 238 last weekend.

Yet he’s not resting on his laurels.

Speaking on Ariel Helwani’s MMA Show on Monday, Henry Cejudo set his sights on the UFC featherweight title.

That title will next be on the line at UFC 240 in July, when reigning champion Max Holloway will look to defend it opposite former lightweight champion Frankie Edgar. Cejudo is hoping Edgar pulls of the upset against Holloway as he believes matches up well with the former lightweight champ.

“Why not? Are you guys going to count me out again?” Henry Cejudo said of a potential featherweight title shot (transcript via MMA Mania).

“The fight I would really want, and this has everything to do with competition; if Frankie Edgar wins this fight against Max Holloway that’s the fight I am interested in,” he said. “We had talked about it before, captain Eric [Albarracin] mentioned it. I like his stature, I think the height seems very well, he is a wrestler. I think if he wins the fight against Max Holloway, then me and him can throw down.”

Edgar also happens to be a training partner of Moraes. In fact, he was Moraes’ chief sparring partner ahead of his loss to Henry Cejudo.

“It’s nothing against Frankie, I just want to compete against the best,” Cejudo said. “I know he took offense when I called him out with Marlon Moraes, I know he didn’t believe in me…but why not? Why can’t I win another belt? They have been telling me I can’t. They told me I was going to get knocked out by Marlon, they told me I’d get stopped by Demetrious Johnson, T.J. Dillashaw.”

“The sky is the limit, I want to challenge my mind, body and soul. If he wins this fight and he wants to do it, let’s make it happen,” he concluded.

Do you think we’ll see Henry Cejudo contend for a third UFC title in the future?
