Former UFC heavyweight champion Fabricio Werdum says he would submit Jon Jones on the ground in a potential cross-promotional superfight.
Werdum, who will take part in PFL’s upcoming third season, was the former UFC heavyweight champion, a title that Jones is hoping to soon win. In Werdum’s final fight in the UFC, he picked up a big upset win when he tapped out Jones’ former rival Alexander Gustafsson. Werdum then signed with PFL, where he hopes to win the $1-mllion dollar grand prize. While winning the PFL title is his current goal, he still has Jones on his mind for a future fight someday between the PFL and UFC champions.
Speaking to Sherdog’s Marcelo Alonso, the Brazilian got fired up when asked about Jones. Werdum said he will win the PFL Heavyweight Grand Prix and he predicted Jon Jones wins the UFC heavyweight belt. His goal is to then have the two meet in a PFL vs. UFC cross-promotional superfight. The 43-year-old promised that if he showed up in the same shape as in the Gustafsson fight, there’s “no doubt” he beats Jones.
“I believe Jones will be the future UFC heavyweight champion. If I win the PFL Heavyweight Grand Prix, it would be great to finally fight him in a cross-promotion superfight. I have no doubt that if I face Jones in the same shape I fought Gustafsson, I would submit him on the ground,” Werdum said.
While a superfight with Jones may be Werdum’s ultimate goal, it won’t be happening anytime soon, even if it is a fun fight to think about on paper. Jones is currently bulking up in anticipation for his UFC heavyweight debut sometime this summer, as UFC president Dana White has promised he will get the winner of the UFC 260 main event between Stipe Miocic and Francis Ngannou. As for Werdum, he is getting ready to step into the PFL cage in April and get on the fast-track to the million-dollar prize.
