Last night, in the main event of the UFC’s first card on ESPN, UFC flyweight champion Henry Cejudo made a lightning quick defense of his title, stopping slimmed down bantamweight champion TJ Dillashaw in just 32 seconds.
In the wake of this shockingly short super fight, fans seem to be divided. There are some fans who are simply impressed with the dominant performance of Henry Cejudo, while others seem to feel the fight was stopped early and that TJ Dillashaw should have been given more time.
Speaking on Twitter after the fight, former UFC lightweight and featherweight champion Conor McGregor gave his take on the fight. In his eyes, both men are “unlucky” — albeit for very different reasons.
“Unlucky T.J on your attempt at Champ Champ status. Respect for your weight cut. I have been there and it is not easy. Unlucky Henry on your attempt at fastest K.O in a UFC title fight. I have been there, and I still am. Congrats on the win. Yours truly, The O.G Champ Champ.” – Conor McGregor on Twitter.
Conor McGregor last fought on October 6, in the main event of the record-breaking UFC 229 pay-per-view. On that night, he attempted to reclaim the UFC lightweight title from reigning champion Khabib Nurmagomedov. Unfortunately for McGregor and his throngs of fans, this mission did not go as planned, as he was thumped to a fourth-round submission loss by the champion.
McGregor’s next most recent fight occurred in the boxing ring, where he battled undefeated legend Floyd Mayweather Jr. in a headline dominating crossover fight. Although the Irishman put up a valiant effort in this, his debut boxing match, he was ultimately stopped by a volley of punches in the 10th round.
McGregor’s second most recent MMA bout occured all the way back in 2016, when he defeated Eddie Alvarez by knockout to win the UFC lightweight title. Because he still owned the UFC featherweight belt at the time, this made him the first fighter in UFC history to wear two titles concurrently.
At present, Conor McGregor is awaiting discipline from the Nevada State Athletic Commission, having been involved in a brawl with Khabib Nurmagomedov’s team after the UFC 229 main event. McGregor is expected to appear in front of the NSAC in late January. A suspension and fine both seem likely.
Whatever the case, Conor McGregor certainly seems to plan on fighting again.
