On Saturday, May 13, the UFC will take over The American Airlines Center in Dallas, Texas with UFC 211. From the early vantage point, the card looks like it will be one of the best of the year – and that can be largely attributed to its dynamite main event.
This main event will see reigning UFC heavyweight champion Stipe Miocic attempt to defend his title against former champion Junior Dos Santos – who happens to be the last man he lost to. The two first met back in late 2014. On that night, Dos Santos picked up a tooth and nail decision win in one of the best fights in UFC heavyweight history.
Since their first meeting, the challenger Dos Santos has fought just twice. In the first of these two fights, he was knocked out by decorated striker Alistair Overeem. In his next and most recent fight, he thrashed the streaking Ben Rothwell to a lopsided decision win, bursting back into title contention as he did.
Miocic, meanwhile, has been on an absolute tear. He rebounded from his loss to Dos Santos with a lopsided, fifth-round TKO of Mark Hunt. From there, he picked up a thudding, first-round knockout win over former champ Andrei Arlovski, which would earn him a crack at Fabricio Werdum‘s heavyweight title. Miocic would win the title with a first-round knockout of an overaggressive Werdum, and then defend that title in his home town of Cleveland, Ohio, knocking out Alistair Overeem in a short, but exciting fight.
