Tyron Woodley reacts to being underdog in Stephen Thompson fight

Tyron Woodley interview

In addition to Tyron Woodley going into his UFC 205 title fight with Stephen Thompson, in the UFC’s historic inaugural event at the Madison Square Garden, with the UFC welterweight championship, he’s also going into the fight as an underdog.

After the fight was announced earlier this month, current betting odds on Bovada have Woodley as a +150 underdog ahead of the fight, with Stephen ‘Wonderboy’ Thompson coming in as a -185 favorite.

Tyron Woodley Stephen Thompson

To simplify the above numbers, a $100 bet on Woodley would potentially earn you $150, while it would take a $185 bet on Thompson, the favorite, to potentially win $100.

Thompson will be entering the bout on a 7-fight win streak that has seen him defeat numerous top ranked opponents including former welterweight champion Johnny Hendricks, and most recently Rory MacDonald. Woodley on the other hand will be riding a 2-fight win streak into the bout, with his most recent win being a 1st round KO win over Robbie Lawler.

Ahead of the fight, ‘The Chosen One’ isn’t too concerned with being an underdog. He spoke on UFC Tonight about the situation, saying:

“I like being the underdog. I think my last 5 or 6 fights I’ve been the underdog, and I’ve only lost one. In general, statistically showing, I do well as the underdog.

“I don’t think I’ll be the underdog before the fight when they see how I’m training, when they see my focus, when they see what I’m bringing to the table. When I was fighting Kelvin Gastelum, I was the underdog. But to answer your question, I think that His fight style has been frustrating for a lot of people.”
