Fired-Up Tony Ferguson tells Conor McGregor to “Defend or Vacate”

Tony Ferguson

Last November, in the main event of the blockbuster UFC 205, Ireland’s Conor McGregor knocked out Eddie Alvarez to win the UFC lightweight title. With this win, the already sought-after superstar became the target of the lightweight division’s top contenders – namely Khabib Nurmagomedov and Tony Ferguson.

Regrettably for fighters like Nurmagomedov and Ferguson, McGregor quickly sniffed out the next most lucrative possibility for his career – and it doesn’t involve an immediate defense of his lightweight title. Instead, the Irishman has become transfixed on the possibility of a boxing mega-fight with recently un-retired star Floyd Mayweather, and with Mayweather interested too, there seems to be a real possibility that this fight happens.

While the details of this fight are hashed out, the lightweight division’s top contenders have been relegated to the proverbial waiting room, as their champion is nowhere to be found. Now, it seems that the already frustrated Tony Ferguson is getting tired of waiting.

On Wednesday evening, the streaking contender took to Twitter to challenge McGregor to defend his title, or vacate it. See his Tweet below.

“[Conor McGregor,” Better get that cardio right son,” Ferguson’s Tweet said. ‘Can’t run forever. [Defend or vacate.] That bitch is mine, don’t trip, just drop it and walk away.”

When we last saw Ferguson in action, he solidified his status as one of the division’s top fighters with an action-packed decision defeat of former champ Rafael Dos Anjos. With this win, he increased his current streak to a whopping nine-straight. Ferguson was scheduled for an interim title fight with Khabib Nurmagomedov – an effort to keep the lightweight division moving in McGregor’s stead – but unfortunately this fight fell through when Nurmagomedov took ill during his weight cut.

Do you understand Tony Ferguson’s frustration? Should Conor McGregor be forced to vacate the lightweight crown? Sound off, PENN Nation!
