In less than two weeks’ time, the UFC will take over Madison Square Garden in New York City, New York with UFC 205. While this historic card’s main selling point is its massive, Conor McGregor vs. Eddie Alvarez main event, its co-main event has also got fans counting down the days in anticipation.
This co-main event will see welterweight champion Tyron Woodley, who is fresh off a title-winning KO of Robbie Lawler, defend his title against streaking karate specialist Stephen “Wonderboy” Thompson.
Wonderboy’s path to the title has been a long one, and its twists and turns have been guarded by some of the UFC’s most ferocious welterweights. After experiencing a loss to Matt Brown in his second bout with the UFC, the karate expert embarked on an incredible, seven-fight winning streak, battling names like Robert Whittaker, Patrick Cote, Jake Ellenberger, Johny Hendricks and Rory MacDonald along the way.
His win against Ellenberger, who still stood out as one of the division’s top fighters at the time of their meeting, was particularly impressive, and is probably the performance that transformed him from contender to bona fide title contender. You can watch this career-changing win, which marked Thompson’s first time headlining a UFC card, at the top of this post. Just don’t blink, or you’ll miss the knockout.
In addition to its Conor McGregor vs. Eddie Alvarez main event, and its Tyron Woodley vs. Stephen Thompson co-main event, UFC 205 will also feature a third title fight. This third championship bout will see strawweight champ Joanna Jedrzejczyk defend her title against fellow undefeated fighter and countrywoman Karolina Kowalkiewicz.
Outside of these three title fights, UFC 205 will also feature the returns of former champions Chris Weidman and Miesha Tate, who will look to rebound from title losses to Luke Rockhold and Amanda Nunes respectively. The main card will also include a welterweight bout between Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone and Kelvin Gastelum while the stacked preliminary bill feature names like Frankie Edgar, Jeremy Stephens, Khabib Nurmagomedov, Michael Johnson, Rashad Evans and Tim Kennedy.
