Amanda Nunes explains why she apologized to Ronda Rousey

Amanda Nunes

Late last year, in the main event of UFC 207, UFC women’s bantamweight champion Amanda Nunes cut Ronda Rousey down in a mere 48 seconds. It was as brutal as beatings come.

In the buildup to this fight Nunes had been pretty quiet. Though she has proven herself to be more than capable of slinging effective trash talk when the need arises, she was quite civil in the buildup to her fight with Rousey.

After the fight, however, Nunes did let a few criticisms of the former champ go, suggesting she might have been overrated during her dominant heyday. And though none of these comments were particularly vicious, and none generated much in the way of controversy, the champion was later compelled to take to social media to issue Rousey an apology.

Shortly after Nunes made this apology, she spoke with the Las Vegas Review-Journal and explained her reasons for doing so.

“The apology was because the words that I said,” she explained. “I think it was a little bit too much because I was very upset, very mad because how I was promoted [for] the whole thing. I was the champion and I didn’t have the credit I was supposed to have. I feel like everything was about her,” Nunes said.

“I never fight mad before. That was the only fight that they made me fight mad, upset, and hurt. They hurt me and after the fight I can’t control myself. I say bad words and I know I have a lot of kids that night, a lot of people that didn’t want to hear that bad speech. But I was so upset and so hurt, I can’t hold myself [back]. That’s why I decided to post that after a couple days, a couple weeks after the fight because I was better now. I can hear everything, all the things, and I’ve calm down more but I was very upset with the whole thing.”

Do you think Amanda Nunes was right to apologize to Ronda Rousey? Sound off, PENN Nation!
