Well, he did it. Georges St-Pierre came back to the UFC after being out four years and proved he still is one of the greatest fighters of all time. A career welterweight who reigned supreme before stepping away, St-Pierre jumped up to middleweight and took the title away from Michael Bisping by literally choking him out. It was the cherry on top of an absolutely insane UFC 217 card. However, the combat sports universe never stops. Robert Whittaker has waited long enough and wants his shot to unify the middleweight title. But that’s not all, challengers are waiting in both of St-Pierre’s divisions.
Thx for a gr8 week NY. @danawhite @bisping @GeorgesStPierre wat
an amzing fight! GSP lets unify anywhere anytime. B an honor champ #anywhere— Robert Whittaker (@robwhittakermma) November 7, 2017
When Robert Whittaker beat Yoel Romero to become the interim UFC middleweight champion, the UFC brass declared he’d be the one to get the shot at the winner of Bisping and St-Pierre. GSP himself even has said that he is “contractually obligated” to defend the middleweight title. But does that mean that it happens? Tyron Woodley, the welterweight king of a new generation, wants St-Pierre whether it is in his division or not. Georges St-Pierre has said he only has four fights on his current contract, that means he’ll be careful how he spends them.
One of the reasons St-Pierre left was the anxiety of being a dominant champion. No matter how many wars he had, there was always a contender, one after another, that just kept coming. Did St-Pierre really come back just to get back into the gauntlet of defending his new middleweight title against even bigger and arguably more dangerous opponents? We’ll have to wait and see. Meanwhile, Woodley is trying to draw GSP out to contend his best welterweight of all time legacy against him.
@ufc I want the winner of this fight! @GeorgesStPierre or @bisping could get these hands! Too slow with no power! #UFC217
