What happens when welterweight knockout artist “Platinum” Mike Perry and MMA legend Jon Jones cross paths in Albuquerque? Well, some training, to be sure…But also a few tequila shots. Or, “like 100.”
Speaking on the JW Raw Podcast this week, Perry opened up on a particularly wild night that he shared with Jones.
“He kept buying drinks, man,” Perry said (transcribed by Steven Marrocco for MMAjunkie). “I feel like he was buying shots and would look at me, and I would take the shot, and then he’d be like [throwing back the drink].”
After this first night of debauchery, which naturally occurred at a bowling alley, Perry said Jones favored a more measured level of drinking.
‘We ain’t gotta go as hard as we did last night,” Perry said Jones told him.
“I was like, ‘OK,’” he added “He bought me a shot of something, and I was like, ‘Alright, I’ll take this one. Don’t buy me another one.’
“He was buying drinks for all these people. It was like a big old shot. And I looked at him, and he’s holding his drink, and he’s putting it up to his mouth, and he tilts the cup a little bit. I see him do that, and I’m like, alright, he’s taking it.
“So I took it, and then he goes, ‘Ah, man, I’m not even gonna.’ And I was like, ‘Aw, dang, bro! You’re getting me messed up out here!’”
Mike Perry will return to the Octagon — hopefully without a tequila hangover — at UFC 226, when he is set to battle fellow fan favorite Yancy Medeiros.
Jon Jones, meanwhile, is currently awaiting sentencing for a failed drug test administered in the lead up to his UFC 214 no contest with his arch rival Daniel Cormier.
What do you think of this story from Mike Perry? How badly do you wish you were there to be a part of it?
