Jose Aldo gets invitation for Bellator MMA fight

Jose Aldo Michael Bisping

Jose Aldo’s future in MMA currently hangs in limbo while he remains adamant that the UFC release him from his contract so he can retire from MMA and play another professional sport.

Aldo’s request came after the UFC announced that Conor McGregor would be moving to lightweight to fight Eddie Alvarez in the main event of UFC 205 for the lightweight championship. In addition, it was revealed that McGregor would not have to vacate his featherweight championship as UFC President Dana White previously stated. The MMA community voiced their dissatisfaction with White changing his mind on making McGregor vacate the featherweight belt if he moves to 155, which prompted the UFC President to reveal that if McGregor wins at UFC 205, he must vacate either the featherweight or lightweight belt.

UFC 202 press conference

Aldo followed up Tuesday’s UFC 205 press conference by requesting that the promotion release him from his contract. UFC President Dana White was quick to attempt to diffuse the situation, responding in a separate interview in which he stated that the promotion was willing to get the interim featherweight champ a fight at UFC 205.

That didn’t sit too well with Aldo, who was quick to fire back and reveal that he wanted to be released from his contract so he could retire from MMA and move to another sport entirely.

While there has been no further word from Aldo, or White, Aldo’s manager revealed Wednesday evening that the interim featherweight champion was willing to take the UFC to court over his contract if they refused to release him over the situation

While Aldo is currently still contracted with the UFC, former Bellator MMA champion Patricio Freire has made Aldo a fight offer via social media.
