Jon “Bones” Jones became the UFC’s interim light heavyweight champion Saturday night in Las Vegas after earning a unanimous decision victory over Ovince Saint Preux in the evening’s main event.
Jones was able to control the fight with “OSP” for the entire five-rounds, however many fans and analysts were not overly impressed with Jon’s performance.
UFC president Dana White spoke to FOX following Jon’s UFC 197 win, where he stated that it was a “good thing” for Jones that he didn’t fight Daniel Cormier that night. His words (transcribed by MMAFighting):
“I’m a firm believer in ring rust,” White said on the FOX Sports 1 post-fight show. “Jon Jones looked rusty tonight and it was a really good thing for him that it was OSP tonight, the sixth-ranked guy, and not Cormier, because he was able to get some rounds under his belt, get in there and feel himself out. Now he knows what he has to do when he gets back in the gym.”
Jon Jones was originally slated to rematch Daniel Cormier at UFC 197. However, “DC” suffered an injury three weeks prior to the event which forced him off the card.
