VIDEO | Jon Fitch hints at retirement, cites “funny reading” on brain MRI

Jon Fitch retires

On New Years Eve, World Series of Fighting (WSOF) made their debut in New York City with WSOF 34. Though the card didn’t generate quite the same buzz as the UFC’s November debut in the city, it was a big one all the same, featuring a whopping four title fights, and appearances by some of the biggest names outside the UFC.

On of the highlights of the main card was a welterweight title fight between champion Jon Fitch, and challenger Jake Shields, both of who have fought for the UFC welterweight title in the past. In a result that registered as a slight upset, Fitch was able to dominate Shields to a unanimous decision win. With this victory, which registers as one of the biggest of his career, he retains the WSOF welterweight title. As it turns out however, Fitch’s defeat of Shields may go down as the last time we see him in the cage.

“I’ve been dealing with a lot of medical sh*t over the years,” Fitch said in his post-fight interview. “[I have a] bulging disc in my neck and I had a funny reading on my brain MRI before this fight. There’s a good chance this was my last fight.”

“I have to talk to some doctors and some neurologists and some people, but I’ve been dealing with a lot of medical stuff lately, and there’s a good chance that this is my last fight.”

“Right now I just want to spend time with my family and just kind of figure things out. I got to talk to the doctors first. It might not be the end, but I’m at least going to have to take some time off.”

Fingers crossed that Fitch’s brain turns out to be healthy.

Do you think the WSOF welterweight champ will end up retiring? Sound off, PENN Nation!
