ONE FC champion Ben Askren is widely believed to be one of the best fighters not currently signed to the UFC. With a 15-0 professional record that has seen Askren not only claim the ONE championship, but also win the Bellator welterweight championship. As if that weren’t enough, Askren defended his ONE FC championship once, and also defended his Bellator championship belt 4 times.
Despite that, the accomplished wrestler has never competed under the UFC banner, which has brought him quite a bit of criticism when fans discuss the top welterweights in MMA.
With former UFC welterweight kingpin Georges St-Pierre in the middle of a contract dispute with the UFC, that most recently saw St-Pierre allegedly terminate his contract due to the fact that the promotion didn’t secure him a fight.
While the UFC brass has maintained that St-Pierre is indeed still under contract, Ben Askren believes the time is now to cement his place as one of the best welterweights on the planet. He spoke in a video that was released via FloCombat:
“I’ve never lost. You can’t say I’m not the best. When you try to say I’m not the best, you don’t have a great argument for it. People try to say I’m not the best, they don’t really have a good argument [for it] besides the fact that I’ve never had the opportunity to fight someone that’s that highly ranked. I mean, Lima was in the top 15 when I fought him, so was Jay Hieron, so was Dan Hornbuckle, now once I beat their ass they moved down a little bit, but now Andrey Koreshkov (Who Askren TKOd in 2013 in Bellator) is a top 10 top 15 guy, and I manhandled him.”
“I would say, if I’m making the argument, it’s very easy to argue that Georges St-Pierre is the #1 welterweight in the world, still to this day because he never lost going out. So when you’re talking about me versus him, that’s a matchup that everyone wants to see, and the fact that he’s been out for three years and he’s returning, the fact that I’ve never been able to face anyone in the top 5, that leaves a lot of intrigue to the matchup. So I think that’s a matchup that sells huge.”
