Gegard Mousasi explains how “stupid” Bisping vs. St-Pierre affects the division

Gegard Mousasi returns at Bellator 200

Early in 2017, news surfaced that former UFC welterweight kingpin Georges St-Pierre would be returning to the Octagon to fight middleweight champion Michael Bisping. UFC President Dana White confirmed the news, and both Bisping and St-Pierre appeared at a press conference for the scrap.

With that being said, there was no date given for the bout, leading many to wonder when it would take place. Apparently Michael Bisping felt the same way, because the champ released a statement in which he threatened to take St-Pierre’s title shot back and give it to middleweight #1 contender Yoel Romero.

Now, in an interview with MMAJunkie, UFC 210’s Gegard Mousasi spoke about how a Bisping vs. St-Pierre scrap is holding up the division:

“The UFC is making these fights that don’t make any sense,” Mousasi said. “Dan Henderson and now (Georges St-Pierre), so if they would have done it the correct way, Romero would have fought for his belt, (Ronaldo) ‘Jacare’ (Souza) would have got his shot by now, and I would have been afterwards. But because of this fight (between Bisping and St-Pierre) that really doesn’t make any sense, the No. 1 contenders have to wait.

“Let’s say after this fight, I have to put everything on the line again to get a win, and then fight for the title, where it actually should have been me already if the UFC hadn’t made those stupid fights.”

Mousasi of course is currently gearing up to fight former UFC middleweight champion Chris Weidman at UFC 210, where he will look to build on his impressive 4-fight win streak that saw Mousasi put together one of the most impressive win streaks last year.

Only time will tell if Mousasi is able to defeat Weidman and move one step closer to earning a title shot.
