Fresno State has been without a wrestling program for nearly 8 years. Today however there was good news brought to the Fresno State Bulldogs. President Joseph Castro announced that the D-1 wrestling program would be reinstated the program, and will finalize a timeplan that will outline the program’s return.

The Fresno Bee broke the news earlier today.

“It’s no longer a question of whether (wrestling will return),” Castro said. “That decision was made on my 100th day when I said we were going to do it. … I expect to make an announcement later this fall.”

Fresno State had a very successful wrestling program prior to the program being cut in 2006. Although no UFC fighters have graduated from Fresno, the university has produced 21 All-Americans, and 3 national champions, including Olympic Medalist Stephen Abas, who took second in the games in 2004, the same year Daniel Cromier was on the team.

This is a good sign for the sport of wrestling, which was forced to start a ‘#SaveOlympicWrestling’ campaign over Twitter to keep the sport in the Olympic games last year.
