On Saturday night, the UFC touched down in Houston, Texas with UFC Fight Night 104.
In the co-main event of this exciting card, 23-year-old strawweight prospect Alexa Grasso took on veteran Felice Herrig. From the early vantage point, Grasso was widely expected to blow through her experienced foe – as evidenced by her status as a 3-1 betting favorite. In the end, however, Herrig pulled off the upset with a nice unanimous decision win.
With this win, Herrig moves onto a two-fight win-streak, having tapped another prospect in Kailin Curran in her next most recent fight. Having re-established herself as a strawweight contender with this modest streak, she’s hoping for a big name opponent in her next fight. In fact, she has two names in mind in particular.
One of these names is Paige VanZant, who she lost to in April of 2015. The other Michelle Waterson, who recently surged into title contention with a first-round submission defeat of VanZant.
Herrig explained her desire for these fights to MMAJunkie.com shortly after her win.
“I would hope the UFC would do the right thing and give me either Paige or Michelle Waterson,” she said. “I wasn’t vocal about it, but I was offered the Waterson fight [at UFC on FOX 23], and I accepted it, and then two weeks later, I had it taken away from me and given to Paige.”
Herrig went on to explain that she’s been after a fight with Waterson since they appeared on the reality program Fight Girls together.
“I’ve been trying to fight her in a muay Thai fight ever since then,” Herrig said. “When I call these people out, it’s not in a disrespectful way. I feel really confident in myself again, and I would like to climb the ranks.”
