Daniel Cormier vows to knock Rumble Johnson out

Daniel Cormier

In the main event of UFC 210, UFC light heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier will step into the Octagon to defend his title belt for the second time as he once again will meet heavy handed knockout artist Anthony ‘Rumble’ Johnson. Cormier announced the matchup earlier in the week during an appearance on Fox Sports 1’s ‘UFC Tonight’.

This isn’t the first time the pair were scheduled to meet in the Octagon, back in 2016 at UFC 206 in Toronto, the pair were supposed to have their rematch for Cormier’s belt, however Cormier was forced out of the bout after he tore an adductor in his groin. Cormier revealed his intentions to return to the Octagon in early spring, which turned out to be right on point with the announcement of his April 8th fight with Johnson.

Johnson Cormier

Ahead of the fight, which is expected to serve as the main event, given Cormier’s Olympic calibre wrestling, and given the fact that he won the pair’s first fight using his wrestling to ultimately get a submission win, many expected Cormier to enter into the rematch with a similar gameplan.

On UFC Tonight he revealed that wasn’t the case:

ufc light heavyweight champion

“I get to go in there and fold up Rumble Johnson like a nice load of laundry. No wrestling. I’m standing up with Rumble Johnson. You say you’re going to knock me – prove it to me on April 8th. I’ll be waiting for you. I’m going to stand with this dude. What’s the worst that can happen?”

This of course likely plays right into Johnson’s plan of keeping the fight standing and knocking Cormier out, adding his fourth straight win by KO. Of course Cormier could merely be bluffing and attempting to throw Johnson off from his gameplan.
