VIDEO | Dan Henderson’s Backstage Interview

Dan Henderson

On Saturday night, a 46-year-old Dan Henderson fought his last fight as a professional mixed martial artist. He did so against an old rival in England’s Michael Bisping, with the UFC middleweight title on the line.

Though Henderson nearly stopped his foe on punches in the first and second rounds, and found some success with his wrestling in the fifth frame, he ultimately came up short on the judges’ scorecards. That, unfortunately, meant that he would retire having never won a title in the UFC.

In the moments after this competitive loss to Bisping, Henderson spoke with the UFC’s Megan Olivi, weighing in on his career as a whole, and what the future holds now that competing is no longer a part of his life.

“I’m completely satisfied with everything I’ve done,” the MMA legend said of his career. “Going into this fight, win or lose, I was already feeling that [I’d retire]. My last fight in LA could have been my last fight, I was ready I was satisfied, but obviously given this opportunity, I was gonna do one more. I know I’ve accomplished a lot, and I really worked my ass off for this fight. For it to not go my way is a little frustrating.”

Now that his fighting days are done, Henderson explained to Olivi that his focus will shift to coaching, and with a little luck, a desk job with the UFC.

“I coach now, I have guys at my gym,” Henderson said. “I’ll obviously spend a lot more time doing that. Less time training myself and more time training them. And yeah, I already told Dana [White] I’ll be hitting him for a job pretty soon.”

Do you think Henderson deserved the win over Michael Bisping? What do you think of his legendary career? Sound off, PENN nation!
