Room for debate: Conor ‘McGregor is only fooling himself if he thinks he could defeat Lawler or any other Top 10 welterweight’

Conor McGregor 145

UFC featherweight champion Conor McGregor is the most popular and polarizing fighter in the fight game today. The outspoken Irishman has broken records in the UFC and has talked his way up to having a chance to make history by becoming the first fighter in the UFC to simultaneously hold two division’s titles.

The task at hand will be no easy matter as he is set to face UFC lightweight champion Rafael dos Anjos who has also been on an absolute tear in the lightweight division.

However, there has been a buzz from McGregor and his team about the future if he indeed makes history and beats Rafael dos Anjos at UFC 196 on March 5 in Las Vegas, Nevada. The talk of going up to the next weight class and challenging the welterweight champion Robbie Lawler for his belt is and option that team McGregor is looking at.

A very opinionated piece on MMA Weekly takes a strong stance that Conor McGregor going up to welterweight would simply be disastrous for the king of the 145-pounds division.

From MMA Weekly:

“…WEIGHT CLASSES MATTER. You can push it a little bit, but getting hit by Lawler would be a lot different than getting hit by Jose Aldo (although, yes, we know that never happened).

McGregor is great for the sport. MMA needs better talkers. There’s a reason why professional wrestling kills MMA in every measurable way when it comes to revenue. Pro wrestlers know how to talk and entertain. Most MMA fighters don’t know how to entertain. But with McGregor there’s fine line between talking and trolling, and McGregor is only fooling himself if he thinks he could defeat Lawler or any other Top 10 welterweight. McGregor knows he doesn’t want to be hanging upside down outside the MGM Grand Garden.”

We know that this fires up a hot topic for debate, so let’s take this discussion to the comment section.
