On August 26th, Conor McGregor and Floyd Mayweather will compete in what many consider the biggest fight in combat sports history. With that being said however, not everyone shares the same enthusiasm regarding the fight. Boxing legend Oscar De La Hoya even went as far as to pen a lengthy letter in an attempt to prevent the fight from ever taking place.

With that being said, De La Hoya recently spoke in an interview, where he looked to discredit the fight, saying:

“It’s one of those boxing matches that’s gonna be irrelevant to our major fight, and real fight, that we have against two real boxers on September 16th. First of all, how did the commission ever sanction such a fight? And how can a fighter who has zero experience in boxing go against the very best, and pretend he can win? It’s almost unheard of. Look, Floyd Mayweather is one of the best boxers in our generation, and for McGregor to think that he can out-box Mayweather is a little delusional. It’s speaking the truth, but hey, may they have a good fight, and then we can move on to focus on our real fight on September 16th.”

The fight De La Hoya is referencing of course is the September 16th middleweight fight between Canelo Alvarez and GGG, in a fight which has been highly anticipated by the boxing community for quite some time, but was only made official following Canelo Alvarez’ masterful and dominant victory over Julio Cesar Chavez Jr.

While De La Hoya attempted to prevent the fight from ever taking place, he has stated that he isn’t concerned with that fight taking attention away from the Canelo Alvarez vs. GGG fight the following month.
