Trash talking Colby Covington offers Tyron Woodley a reminder on social media

Colby Covington

Surging welterweight contender Colby Covington has spent much of the last year talking trash about current welterweight champion Tyron Woodley. When Covington authored a career-best win over Demian Maia late last month, his verbal assault on Woodley picked up even more steam.

On Monday, the trend continued, as Covington took to Instagram to offer Woodley a bit of a reminder. In this post, Covington told Woodley, who has been criticized for the tepid nature of his last few wins, that his job is to put his opponents to sleep, not the fans.

See Covington’s post below:

Hey Tyquil @TWooodley you know your job is to put your opponents to sleep and not the fans watching right? #tyquilwoodley #softass #humanblanket #gossipgirl @ufc @danawhite

“Hey Tyquil you know your job is to put your opponents to sleep and not the fans watching right?” Covington said in his post.

While this is certainly a clever jab from Covington, it does ignore Woodley’s many highlight reel knockouts. While the champ’s last fights have been rather slow, he’s also authored some of the most emphatic stoppages in UFC welterweight history, having crushed fighters like Josh Koscheck, Dong Hyun Kim and Robbie Lawler.

Though Woodley has repeatedly expressed interest in a fight with new middleweight champ Georges St-Pierre, the streaking Covington could well be the next man on his itinerary. Then again, that honor could also go to the winner of Rafael Dos Anjos and Robbie Lawler’s December scrap, should Woodley opt to take some time off.

Covington is currently on an incredible five-fight streak composed of wins over Jonathan Meunier, Max Griffin, Bryan Barberena, Dong Hyun Kim and Demian Maia. Woodley, meanwhile, is 5-0-1 in his last six, having defeated Dong Hyun Kim, Kelvin Gastelum, Robbie Lawler, Stephen Thompson and Demian Maia, and battled Thompson to a draw.
