To put it bluntly, Phil “CM Punk” Brooks’ MMA career did not go well. The former WWE star is now hoping commentary will be a better fit.
Punk made his MMA debut at UFC 203 where he lost via first-round submission to Mickey Gall. Punk would then take almost two years off before returning only to lose a unanimous decision to Mike Jackson at UFC 225 in June.
Many fans believed Punk did not belong in the UFC nor did he belong on a pay-per-view main card which he was at for both of his fights.
Now Punk is off to UFC Fight Pass, but not for fighting.
Cage Fury Fighting Championships (CFFC) announced today that they have hired Punk as a commentator. CFFC is arguably the top regional promotion in the world. Their fights are shown on UFC Fight Pass and Punk will make his commentating debut on December 14 at CFFC 71.
It's official – welcome to the team @CMPunk!

“I can’t wait for this opportunity to call the CFFC fights on UFC Fight Pass,” Punk said in a statement. “CFFC has a long history of putting on exciting fights featuring some of the sport’s up-and-coming athletes. This card is going to be a lot of fun, and I’m really excited to have the chance to be a part of it.”
It is unknown if Punk will continue fighting in the UFC or MMA in general. Even though his MMA career did not go as planned, the CFFC feel comfortable in Punk’s understanding of MMA to have him as a broadcaster.
“CM Punk’s knowledge and passion for MMA is incredible, and his charisma and personality make him a perfect fit for this role,” CFFC president Rob Haydak said in a statement. “By pairing him with Mike Gill, a true sports broadcasting veteran who has been around the fight game his whole career in Atlantic City, we have a great combination for our first show on UFC Fight Pass.”
It will be interesting to see how Punk fares as a commentator in MMA.
