Chael Sonnen may have some insider knowledge on if CM Punk will fight again. On Monday’s MMA Hour, ‘The American Gangster’ said he has talked to Punk every day following his UFC 203 loss to Mickey Gall, and believes we may have not seen the last of CM Punk in MMA.
“I’ve talked to Punk every day since. He lost that fight on Saturday and was already back in gym that Monday. He wants to fight. This is what he wants to do. He’s got that skill set.”
“I think Punk proved he was a fighter, he tried very hard, he was in a tough position, he tried to climb Mount Everest with almost no time to prepare. What mickey gall did to him was about as bad as ground-and-pound can get. Punk was trying to defend against the chokes. Skill-wise there was a big difference between the two. But his heart was tested, and he gets an A+ for effort.”
Punk had been training at Roufusport with the likes of Anthony Pettis for nearly two years before finally stepping in the Octagon at UFC 203 in September. He was quickly taken down by Gall and submitted a little over two minutes into the first round.
UFC President Dana White doesn’t appear to think Punk’s next fight will be under the UFC banner, but with Bellator signing more and more UFC fighters with star power, there are options for the former WWE superstar.
