Tuesday morning, UFC Unfiltered featured UFC President Dana White as the lead guest. The UFC don dropped a number of tidbits — one of which being a bout between Ben Saunders was in the works for UFC Sunrise.
However, later that evening Ariel Helwani reported a bout between Mike Perry and Alex Oliveira was in the works for the event, while Damon Martin tweeted Ben Saunders would be facing a UFC newcomer.
MMA Asia is now reporting Saunders will instead be fighting Pancrase staple Takashi Sato (14-2) on April 27.
Orlando’s Saunders will have a homecoming of sorts, competing in his home state for the fist time since February of 2018, when he dropped a “Fight of the Night” effort to Alan Jouban.
Having lost four out of his last fight, it’s quite possible Saunders will be fighting for his job against Japan’s top regional welterweight.
A winner of six of his last seven, Tokyo’s Sato made his Pancrase debut in 2013. Since that time, Sato has been victorious in all but two outings. The 28-year-old striker has finished his last five victories by way of knockout. This makes the clash with Saunders all that more interesting.
