Melvin Guillard (32-14-2 MMA) will make his Bellator debut next month when he squares off against fellow lightweight Brandon Girtz (11-4 MMA) in the headlining bout of Bellator 141.
Bellator officials announced the news earlier today:
“Since signing Melvin in May, we have been anxious to get him inside the Bellator cage,” Bellator MMA President Scott Coker stated. “Brandon Girtz has performed well for us and will face his stiffest competition to date when he meets the 50-fight veteran. I’m really looking forward to the event, as well as returning to one of our favorite venues in Pechanga Resort & Casino.”
Guillard returns to action after a tumultuous run with World Series of Fighting. Melvin won his WSOF debut by defeating Gesias Cavalcante via TKO. Following the win, “The Young Assassin” was shceduled to to challenge Justin Gaethje for the WSOF lightweight title. However, Guillard ended up missing weight, resulting in the fight becoming a non-title affair, which Gaethje won via split decision.
Guillard was then scheduled to compete at the WSOF 20 event against Ozzy Dugulubgov, but that fight was scratched on four days notice when WSOF officials failed to receive Guillard’s medical paperwork. Guillard was subsequently released by the promotion.
Meanwhile, Brandon Girtz was most recently seen in action at September’s Bellator 126 event, where he scored a first-round TKO victory over Benny Madrid. “Cold Roll” has gone 3-1 in his past four fights under the Bellator banner, with his lone loss in that time coming to Derek Anderson at Bellator 113.
