Bellator’s welterweight champion Douglas Lima is out for the rest of 2014 according to the fighter.
Lima stated that he injured his ribs, and as a result won’t be able to train for 6-weeks, not giving him enough time to train for a fight by the end of 2014.
He spoke on MMAJunkie Radio about the injury today.
“I’m about six weeks off training right. (I hurt) my rib cartilage. It is what it is. (It happened) training – grappling, sparring, or something. I need a few months off.”
“Andrey Koreshkov is next in line, but I’m not sure (when the fight will happen) because I heard he just had surgery on his shoulder … Maybe January or February of next year. He’s injured, I’m injured, so we’ll see.”
Lima lost his first fight for the Bellator title back in 2012 to Ben Askren, but bounced back to go on a 5-fight win streak and win the vacant title earlier this year after Askren vacated it and joined ONE FC.
