With featherweight champion Conor McGregor scheduled to take on lightweight champ Eddie Alvarez, much of the Floyd Mayweather vs. McGregor talk has died down.

But for a while, the thought of a superfight between boxing and MMA’s most talented and brightest shining stars was a serious discussion. With McGregor teasing fight posters featuring a fight between the two and ‘Money’ Mayweather talking about the fight at length in interviews with the media, a superfight between the two seemed like a very real possibility.

However, UFC president Dana White had a feeling that a fight between McGregor and Mayweather would never come into fruition, simply because they never really wanted to fight each other, White himself told TMZ Sports.

“No, I never thought it was gonna happen,” White said. “It’s two totally different sports. I’m sure they want the money (for that superfight), but I don’t know how badly they want to actually make that a reality.”

“Listen, Conor is under contract with me. We can start with kicks, punches, and elbows (if the two actually fight).”

When asked if he means Floyd would need to up his MMA game, White did not mince words in his reply.

“That’s right. (Mayweather) doesn’t have to learn (MMA), but he will be kicked and elbowed.” 

Mayweather remains retired for now after going a perfect 49-0, while McGregor will look to be the first fighter in UFC history to simultaneously hold two belts at featherweight and lightweight should he defeat Alvarez at UFC 205 in November.
