This past weekend, boxing superstar Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez picked up yet another spectacular win as he knocked out Liam Smith with a beautiful body shot to win the WBO light middleweight title in Texas.

The win, which was an incredibly dominant one for Alvarez, set the stage for what fans hoped to be an iconic superfight between Alvarez and WBC, IBF & IBO Champion Gennady Golovkin. Unfortunately, fight fans will have to wait to see that fight as news has now surfaced from Sherdog that Alvarez fractured his thumb.

The report goes on to reveal that Alvarez will need to have his hand immobilized for 6-weeks, and will be unable to make his return to competition this year. Fortunately for Alvarez, he will not need to undergo surgery for the injury.

While of course at this time there has been no mention of when Alvarez will return to the ring given that the injury just recently occurred, many are expecting him to make a return on May 5th, Cinco de Mayo.

Canelo’s win over Smith made it 6-straight for the Guadalajara native, whose only defeat came in 2013 at the hands of Floyd Mayweather. With the win over Smith, Alvarz’s record improved to 48-1-1.
