Curtis Blaydes set a new UFC record in his lopsided, UFC Nashville defeat of Justin Willis.

The rising heavyweight contender completed seven takedowns in his fight with Willis, carrying his UFC total to a whopping 40. This is now the record for the most takedowns completed by any heavyweight in UFC history.

The record for takedowns completed by a UFC heavyweight was previously held by Cain Velasquez, who’s secured 34 takedowns during his time in the Octagon.

Unsurprisingly, Curtis Blaydes is quite proud of his proven wrestling chops.

“I knew he couldn’t stop my wrestling,” Blaydes said during a post-fight scrum (via FanSided). “I knew that’s what I was going to do to him. I dreamt about it. I envisioned it the entire eight weeks. I knew that was going to happen.

“[The record] means I’m going to continue to use my wrestling because I know it’s very dominant and the scores [from the judges (30-27, 30-26, 30-25)] proved that.”

Curtis Blaydes added that he seems some similarities between himself and reigning UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov — another seemingly unstoppable takedown machine.

He plans to keep channeling the lightweight champion as he advances through the heavyweight rankings, collecting takedowns, victories, and win bonuses.

“I’ll Khabib my way through the division,” Blaydes said. “As long as I’m getting win bonuses, fine with me.”
