Report | UFC is “losing patience” with women’s flyweight champ Nicco Montano

Nicco Montano, Valentina Shevchenko

Last week, reports surfaced that the UFC’s July 28 trip to Calgary, Alberta, Canada could be topped by a women’s flyweight title fight between champion Nicco Montano, and fearsome number-one-contender Valentina Shevchenko. Apparently, however, negotiations for this fight are slowly curdling, and the UFC is losing patience with its long-absent flyweight queen.

This news comes from Ariel Helwani on Twitter.

“UFC is losing patience with Nicco Montaño,” Helwani said in a Tuesday morning Tweet. “As I reported last week, the plan was for her to defend the 125 title against Valentina Shevchenko in Calgary but they are having a hard time getting a commitment from her. While it’s not scrapped, they are now looking at other options.”

This is in keeping with a recent report from ESPN’s Brett Okamoto, who suggested that the UFC is now eyeing a lightweight rematch between top contenders Dustin Poirier and Eddie Alvarez for the Calgary card’s main event.

“Not official, but I’m hearing UFC is interested in doing the Alvarez/Poirier rematch in Calgary on July 28,” Okamoto said in a Monday night Tweet. “That’s a heck of a main event if it comes together.”

The UFC’s first-ever female flyweight champion, Nicco Montano has not fought since December, when she captured the title with a decision defeat of WMMA pioneer Roxanne Modafferi in a riveting contest. Her next most recent fight occurred in January of 2017, when she gave up a decision to Julia Avila. Montano is 4-2 as a pro.

Valentina Shevchenko, meanwhile, recently made her debut in the women’s flyweight division with a lopsided destruction of Priscila Cachoeira. This win was preceded by a closely contested loss to reigning UFC women’s bantamweight champion Amanda Nunes. Shevchenko is currently a strong 15-3 overall, with her only losses coming to Nunes and former title challenger Liz Carmouche. Given her dominance, fans have been eager to see her contend for gold at flyweight. Unfortunately, it seems that could take awhile.

What do you make of the situation between Nicco Montano and Valentina Shevchenko?
