Dustin Poirier explains why he’s not interested in rematches with Conor McGregor or Eddie Alvarez

Surging UFC lightweight contender Dustin Poirier picked up another thrilling stoppage victory in the headliner of last night’s UFC on FOX 29 event in Glendale.

“The Diamond” went to war with Justin Gaethje for the better part of sixteen minutes before eventually putting the former World Series of Fighting champion away with punches early in round four.

With the win, Poirier improved his career mixed martial arts record to 23-5 with 1 no-contest.

Since losing to Conor McGregor in September of 2014, which marked Poirier’s final fight at featherweight, Dustin has since gone 7-1 with 1 no-contest over his past nine fights.

Following his thrilling victory over Gaethje, Poirier proceeded to call for a title shot against reigning UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov.

“The Diamond” spoke about the callout during last night’s post-fight press conference.

“I want to fight for gold, man,” Poirier told MMAjunkie. “I’m not chasing rematches with Conor (McGregor), or rematches with Eddie (Alvarez). That’s not my goal. My goal isn’t to get even with these guys. My goal is to prosper and be a world champion and make money and retire and say, ‘I did it.’

Poirier continued:

“I just want to go to sleep with that belt around my waist one night and tell my wife, ‘I did it.’ Years and years ago, in 2006, I didn’t have a car, and (my wife) would drive me to weigh-ins. We would sleep in broken-down motels and fight the next day, just me and her. I just want to say, ‘I did it,’ man.”

Last night’s Dustin Poirier vs. Justin Gaethje fight is already being touted as an early “Fight of the year” candidate.
