McGregor vs GSP ‘off the table’ for UFC 205

Georges St-Pierre

A respected source within the MMA world squashed rumors that have been circulating of a potential superfight between former welterweight kingpin Georges St-Pierre and Conor McGregor.

Ariel Helwani tweeted that the fight was “off the table” in response to a question regarding the match-up, which had been rumored to take place at UFC 205 in New York City.

Talk of a GSP-McGregor superfight began shortly after the former welterweight champ hinted at a desire to return to the Octagon in June. Ever since, speculation has run rampant over if and when GSP will return, and who he would fight should he indeed come out of retirement.

Saint Pierre hasn’t fought since defeating Johnny Hendricks back at UFC 167 in 2013. ‘Rush’ retired from the sport after relinquishing his welterweight title, which he never officially lost.

Meanwhile, McGregor most recently evened the score with Nate Diaz at UFC 202. While the brash Irishman is still technically the featherweight champion after knocking out Jose Aldo in 13 seconds back at UFC 194, he has not defended his title since winning it, instead opting to go to welterweight where he went 1-1 against the Stockton slugger.

UFC 205 will be the first event held in the Empire State and will take place at the historic Madison Square Garden. So far, the milestone event is set to feature a middleweight bout between Yoel Romero and former champ Chris Weidman as well as a barnburner welterweight affair between Robbie Lawler and Donald ‘Cowboy’ Cerrone.

No word yet on whether fans can expect to see GSP back in the Octagon for UFC 205, let alone anytime soon.

Do you think GSP will return to fighting or will the former champ remain retired? Who would you like to see him face in a potential comeback fight? Sound off in the comments section, PENN Nation!
