Ronda Rousey wins ESPN’s “Best Female Athlete Ever” Award

Ronda Rousey

Only six fights into her Ultimate Fighting Championship career, Ronda Rousey has solidified herself as the most dominant athlete the sport has to offer. Fighters and naysayers can come along and try to challenge that, but the fact remains that nobody has destroyed their competition quite like Rousey has.

After her victory at UFC 190 against Bethe Correia, Rousey was catapulted into mainstream status and has been receiving praise for being a female role model— and rightfully so. In a day and age where reality television rules the world, younger women looking to get into the world of sports need somebody like Rousey to show them that it’s okay to work hard and be as invested in a sport as the guys.

She has been compared to the likes of Serena and Venus Williams as well as Alex Morgan and Mia Hamm; Women who dominate their sport and could give the guys a serious run for their money. Now, ESPN has awarded Rousey the award for Best Female Athlete EVER, as voted by the fans.

As mentioned above, she bested Serena Williams in the finals to earn the right to become the best female athlete of all time. Fans will look at her run in the UFC and compare it to Babe Didrikson Zaharias or Mia Hamm’s body of work, but “Rowdy’s” athletic career goes way back to her childhood when she was competing in judo tournaments. Her run in the regional MMA scene and Strikeforce was impressive, as well.

Do you think Ronda Rousey deserves the title as the “Best Female Athlete Ever”, or is ESPN overreacting? Share your thoughts in the comment section below!
