UFC flyweight champion Demetrious Johnson is the only 125 lb. champ the UFC has ever had and he plans on keeping it that way, for a while.
Johnson currently has six title defenses and will look to make it seven this Saturday at UFC 191 when he takes on John Dodson.
The champ has a certain goal in mind that he’s shooting for and defeating Dodson is the next step towards that accomplishment.
The UFC’s record for most title defenses is currently 10, a record owned by none other than former middleweight king Anderson Silva. Johnson is looking to overthrow the Spider and grab that record before leaving the sport.
Here’s what he told MMAJunkie:
“When I got in the sport, this was a hobby for me, and right now I’m working for my seventh title defense. The record held right now is by Anderson Silva, and it’s 10. So if I can break that, it would be an awesome thing. Then to be able to have the most finishes as a flyweight – most knockouts, submissions and TKOs? That’s another goal. Just being the most active flyweight and champion. I’m a guy that hasn’t had injuries, and that’s a goal I set for myself.”
Do you think Johnson will be able to overtake Silva and earn the most title defenses in UFC history?
