In less than one weeks’ time, UFC lightweight champion Eddie Alvarez will attempt to make the first defense of his title against reigning featherweight champ Conor McGregor. In this fight, Alvarez will attempt to squash McGregor’s history-making ambition to become the first fighter in UFC history to hold titles in two weight classes simultaneously. The two champions will share the main event honors of UFC 205, which will mark the organization’s long awaited debut in New York City, New York –one of the final frontiers for MMA.
In anticipation of this massive lightweight showdown, the UFC has opened its vault and released video of Alvarez’s title-winning destruction of former champion Rafael Dos Anjos.
This fight occured back in July, in the main event of UFC Fight Night 90. At the time, Dos Anjos was looking more and more like an unbeatable champion, having dominated Anthony Pettis to win the crown, and smashed Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone to keep it. As such, he entered this bout with Alvarez as a significant betting favourite, and with the confidence of most fans and media members on his. As far as the majority of the fight community was concerned, he was poised for another impressive defense of his title.
Alvarez evidently didn’t get this memo.
Moments into the fight, Alvarez began to stalk his foe, gradually upping the intensity of his offense. Just beyond the three-minute mark, he was able to hurt the champ, and from there, he didn’t let up. The challenger brutalized the champion with incredible onslaught until the referee was forced to step in. With this unforgettable blitzkrieg win, he had defied the odds to become the UFC lightweight champ.
Whether Alvarez has the same success against McGregor, of course, is difficult to say. Without a crystal ball, the only way we’ll know for sure is by tuning into the main event of UFC 205 this Saturday.
