In the main event of UFC 205, Conor McGregor made history as he claimed the UFC lightweight championship, picking apart Eddie Alvarez throughout the first round and a half, and knocking the champ down several times en route to a second round TKO win that put McGregor’s name in the history books as the first ever simultaneous two division world champion.
The fight was an incredibly impressive one for McGregor, who dropped Alvarez just moments into the fight. Following that, McGregor was able to keep Alvarez on the defense for the remainder of the fight, as he ultimately secured a second round TKO win.
While after the fight McGregor didn’t comment on which title he would be choosing to vacate, UFC President Dana White stated before the fight that McGregor would be forced to vacate either the featherweight or lightweight title if he emerged from the fight victorious. In the weeks leading up to the fight, McGregor mentioned that he planned to keep both belts, and remain active as he planned to defend both the featherweight and lightweight belts.
In addition, following the fight, McGregor didn’t make his ‘personal’ announcement ‘out of left field’ as UFC President Dana White stated that he would.
