The UFC is continuing its push into the Chinese market in a big way. The promotion will be opening a brand new UFC Performance Institute in Shanghai, China. It will reportedly be more than 93,000 square feet and will cost the promotion a whopping $13 million. However, this PI will be quite different from the one that’s been established in Las Vegas.
In Las Vegas, the PI is for UFC athletes to recover, train and help with their weight cutting and nutrition. However, the one in Shanghai will primarily be about developing Asian MMA fighters, with the hope that the fighters will then sign with promotion. The promotion will reportedly offer these fighters ‘scholarships’ which will allow them to train at the PI.
Performance is in our DNA.

“I could not be more excited about the UFC Performance Institute opening in Shanghai,” UFC president Dana White said in a statement (via MMAFighting). “We know there is a ton of talent throughout Asia. Now we will be able to find them and offer them all the incredible training, nutrition, and physical therapy that UFC fighters are getting in the Performance Institute at our headquarters in Las Vegas, right there in China. This is another game changer for the sport, UFC, and potential athletes throughout Asia.”
The timing of this announcement coincides with the promotion’s Saturday fight card in Beijing, and represents the promotion’s latest effort to gain a foothold in the country.
“I think it’s pretty evident why the UFC sees international expansion and growth in Asia and China, specifically,” said James Kimball, the UFC Performance Institute’s Vice President of Operations. “And for us, for the UFC and the UFC PI, the vehicle in which we’re willing to achieve that is through developing talent.
“So, in terms of the model and what’s different … in Vegas, obviously, we’re working with athletes that are currently on the UFC roster. That facility will be available to athletes currently on the UFC roster, but predominantly we will be developing talent. So we’ll be recruiting talent from mainland China and the surrounding regions in (Asia-Pacific) to get them UFC caliber and UFC approved.”
The PI in Shanghai is expected to be open in the middle of 2019. It is currently unknown if the promotion has already signed any fighters to ‘scholarships.’
