Tyron Woodley says he’ll start training with Floyd Mayweather next week

Tyron Woodley

For a time, Floyd Mayweather’s potential move to the perilous world of mixed martial arts was all anybody was talking about. When Mayweather suggested that he’d be preparing for this undeniably risky career change under the tutelage of UFC welterweight champion Tyron Woodley, buzz about his MMA move reached a deafening crescendo.

Over the last few weeks, however, this talk has quieted down significantly. Mayweather and his camp have grown quiet about a potential MMA move, and the fans seem to have lost interest in seeing it happen.

Apparently, however, the plan is still on the table. Speaking during a Thursday Instagram Live session, Woodley said that he and Mayweather will begin training together soon — possibly as early as next week.

“I just talked to Floyd,” Woodley said (transcribed by Clyde Aidoo for MMANews.com). “He was in Singapore…somewhere else. I just talked to him a couple of days ago. So when he get back in town next week, me and him are going to start training.”

Floyd Mayweather last competed in August of 2017, when he improved to 50-0 as a professional boxer with a 10th-round TKO of then UFC lightweight champ Conor McGregor. After this win over McGregor, Mayweather hung up the boxing gloves. From the sounds of it, however, he could be picking up some new, four-ounce MMA gloves in the future.

Tyron Woodley, meanwhile, last fought in July of 2017, when he authored a lopsided unanimous decision defeat of Demian Maia. This win marked Woodley’s third defense of the UFC welterweight title, as he previously defended it with a majority decision win and a draw over Stephen “Wonderboy” Thompson. Woodley won the title with a July 2016 knockout of Robbie Lawler.
