Robbie Lawler leaves American Top Team

Robbie Lawler

Shocking news broke late Wednesday night that former UFC welterweight champion Robbie Lawler has officially left his longtime camp at American Top Team. Lawler had been with the camp for many years, including his UFC welterweight title run, and throughout his title reign. MMAFighting confirmed the news this week, following an initial report from ENTImports.

Lawler went on a 5-fight win streak that saw him win the welterweight championship at UFC 181 in 2014 before then defending the belt twice, defeating Rory MacDonald in a ‘Fight of the Year’ scrap, and Carlos Condit at UFC 195. Following the win over Condit, Lawler stepped into the Octagon at UFC 201 in July to fight Tyron Woodley in the main event of the Georgia-based card. Just minutes into the bout, Woodley knocked Robbie Lawler out stiff to claim the welterweight championship.

In the months following the loss, Lawler has yet to step into the Octagon to fight. While he was briefly linked to a fight with fan-favorite fighter Donald Cerrone, Lawler pulled out of the bout shortly after it was announced, explaining that he would like to take more time off following his KO loss so as not to rush to return to the Octagon.

So far no word yet on where Lawler will look to move his training camp to. Stay tuned for updates as they become available.
