“Platinum” Mike Perry: it might be time for Jake Ellenberger to retire

Mike Perry with one of the best UFC knockouts of 2017

Last night, during the UFC’s latest trip to Nashville, Tennessee, polarizing welterweight striker “Platinum” Mike Perry picked up a knockout of the year contender, shutting the veteran Jake Ellenberger off with a slashing, second-round elbow.

Given that this is the fourth strike-induced stoppage on Ellenberger’s recent record, it’s been suggested by some members of the MMA community that he would be wise to retire. In the opinion of Perry himself, who authored Ellenberger’s latest knockout loss, this may indeed be the case.

“Maybe it’s time to hang up the gloves,” Perry told MMAJunkie.com of his UFC Nashville opponent. “I’d be happy to be his last fight. Maybe he’ll come back and beat somebody else – I don’t know.”

While Perry admitted that Ellenberger could be closing in on the end of the road, he went on to assure that his power strikes are capable of ending the night of any opponent – prospect or veteran.

“When I throw power, man, people go down,” he said. “That’s the way it’s always been. I looked right at him. I didn’t even feel the elbow. It was so smooth, so swift. It just breezed by like the wind. … I wished him goodnight.”

Perry then explained that, because his knockouts are so clean, they don’t require any followup strikes, which he believes makes them less damaging in the long-term.

“Y’all hear how I talk about these people,” he said. “I don’t think I’m going to be the guy that’s going to be the first guy to kill somebody in the UFC. I think that I have clean knockouts, and with a clean knockout, people go to sleep. Then they wake up, they heal up. He’ll be fine.”

What did you think of Mike Perry’s epic knockout win in Nashville? Is it time for Jake Ellenberger to retire? Sound off, PENN Nation!
