Miesha Tate on Loss to Amanda Nunes: “I Really Don’t Remember the Fight”

Miesha Tate

In March of this year, women’s MMA veteran Miesha Tate submitted Holly Holm with a fifth-round rear-naked choke. This win would earn her the coveted women’s bantamweight title. Unfortunately, Tate’s long-awaited time atop the bantamweight throne came to an abrupt just months thereafter, when she was battered and submitted by a ferocious Amanda Nunes in the main event of July’s UFC 200.

In the weeks after this emphatic title loss, it was unclear whether we’d ever see Tate in the Octagon again. She’d hinted at retirement before her bout with Holm, when she was riding a four-fight streak. After her loss with Nunes, this early retirement seemed even more probable.

Luckily for Tate’s fans, however, the lionhearted bantamweight eventually decided she was ready to get back on the horse. She’s now scheduled to kick off the main card of the stacked UFC 205 on November 12, where she will take on the talented Raquel Pennington.

Though this challenge is drawing closer by the day, Tate took a moment to reflect on her loss to Nunes on a recent episode of the UFC Unfiltered podcast. On the show, she made the slightly worrying admission that she doesn’t remember much of the fight.

“I know I trained hard for that fight and I just got clipped really, really early and I really don’t remember the fight,” she said. “I wasn’t aware of my surroundings and I lost my ability to move really and a lost strength in my body and it was the weirdest thing.

“Some people who have been knocked out know there is something going on in your brain, it’s like things are glitching and you aren’t really aware of your surroundings and you are trying to get it together,” she continued.

“I remember circling and trying to get my bearings back together, but she was really aggressive in the first round and she was just on me. I don’t remember shooting and I don’t remember any of that stuff. I was definitely rocked and it’s crazy when you go back and watch it–I don’t remember any of that.”

Needless to say, Tate took some real damage in her fight with Nunes – the kind of damage that could have ill effects on her long-term health. What did you think of Tate’s title loss to Nunes? Sound off, PENN Nation!
